The Italian Open Champion Elena Rybakina is out of the French Open due to sickness
Elena Rybakina was sick for the last two days after winning her match against Linda Noskova by 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the French Open. She won the Italian Open last week and showed her domination in both matches by winning in straight sets in the first two rounds.
Rybakina is the World No. 4 right now in Women’s Singles and was one of the favorite players to win the French Open 2023, but she fell sick after her 2nd match.
She announced her retirement before the 3rd round match against Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo after struggling in the 10 minutes on the court.
“I saw the doctor and they said that actually it’s all a virus here in Paris. I guess with my allergy, immune system just went down and I picked up something. As I said, I was not sleeping well for two days. I had fever, headache. I think you can hear [my voice] also.
“So, yeah, it’s difficult to perform and obviously to run and even breathe. So I think that was the only right decision I could make.” “Of course I’m really upset not be able to play, but I guess that’s life,”
“Yeah, I was actually coming positive here, but as I said, you never know how you’re gonna feel. Was unlucky for me. Yeah, I just try to recover and do my best to be prepared for the grass season already.”
Elena Rybakina said in the interview
Sorribes Tormo got a walkover into a round of 16 of the French Open, and now she will wait for her next opponent, who can be either Beatriz Haddad Maia or Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Elena Rybakina might be able to fit fully in the next major tournament, which is the Championships Wimbledon that is going to start from 3-16 July 2023 in England. It will be played on a grass court.
