Francisco Cerundolo frustrated about chair umpire call over Holger Rune’s double-bounce in French Open 2023
Francisco Cerundolo was angry about the chair umpire’s call over the double-bounce on Holger Rune‘s side, and after the replayed showed, it was clear that it was a double-bounce.
Francisco and Holger had around a 4-hour battle on the French court, which went to Holger Rune’s side, giving him a first-ever 5-setter win against Francisco Cerundolo. The match ended in a tiebreaker in which Holger won by 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (7).
Cerundolo was not happy with Holger as he also did not object to the point even after seeing that it was the wrong call by the umpire.
“Poor sportsmanship from Rune. If it were Alcaraz, he would have called the double bounce and conceded the point. Still, Cerundolo needs to put it in the past,”
Francisco Cerundolo said in the post match conference
Francisco also said that Rune knew that it was a double-bounce, but still, he went with the point that the chair umpire gave, which clearly was not good sportsmanship.
“This is sports,”
“When I was hitting the ball, I just ran for it. But then obviously when I saw it, after he did call it, I saw it after the next point on the TV, and I saw it was a double bounce.
“But the point already happened and he called the score.
“So I felt sorry. Sorry for him. But this is tennis. This is sports. Some umpires, they make mistakes. Some for me; some for him. That’s life.”
Holger said after the match.
It was the fourth round of the French Open (Roland Gross), which ended up in H. Rune’s favor, and now he advanced to the French Open quarter-final against Casper Ruud, who is ranked 4 currently. He won the match against Nicolas Jarry in the fourth round of the French Open.
Rune also got bashed on Twitter after so many fans said that he is not a good sportsperson because if it were Alcaraz, he surely would have done that by giving a point to him back with a free serve.
