The Indian men’s hockey team concluded their campaign in the FIH Pro League 2022-23 with an admirable fourth-place finish, accumulating 30 points from 16 matches. This marked India’s second consecutive fourth-place finish in the prestigious tournament, following their debut season in 2020-21. While the team had a promising start on home soil, their performance in the away leg presented more challenges. Despite missing out on the title, the team exhibited resilience and witnessed standout performances, notably from captain Harmanpreet Singh, who emerged as the tournament’s leading goal scorer.

In the first leg played at home, the Indian team displayed commendable skills, securing five victories, two draws, and suffering just one defeat. Noteworthy triumphs included back-to-back wins over reigning world champions Germany and a thrilling shootout victory against Commonwealth Games champions Australia. The away leg played in Europe proved to be more arduous for the Indian team. Despite starting as leaders in the FIH Pro League points table, India faced difficulties during the eight away games, managing only three wins, one draw, and four defeats. Notably, they encountered strong opposition from eventual champions Netherlands, suffering losses in both encounters.

Although India concluded their campaign with a victory against Argentina, accumulating 30 points from 16 matches, it was insufficient to secure their maiden FIH Pro League title. Netherlands successfully defended their crown with 35 points, closely followed by Great Britain with 32 points. Belgium finished above India in the standings with the same point tally, benefiting from a higher number of wins. Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh shone as the tournament’s top goal scorer for the second consecutive season, amassing an impressive tally of 18 goals. His consistent goal-scoring abilities have been instrumental in India’s performances throughout the FIH Pro League.

Despite finishing fourth in the FIH Pro League 2022-23, the Indian men’s hockey team demonstrated resilience and determination throughout their campaign. Their impressive performances on home turf and the remarkable goal-scoring prowess of captain Harmanpreet Singh showcased their potential and talent. As the team continues to evolve and build on their experiences, they will strive for further success in future editions of the FIH Pro League, aiming to clinch the coveted title and make their mark on the international stage.
