India Retain Uttam Singh as Captain for Junior Asia Cup
Young forward Uttam Singh was retained as the captain for India’s team in the upcoming Junior Asia Cup in Salalah, Oman from May 23-June 1. The tournament will serve as a qualifying event for the forthcoming FIH Junior Men’s World Cup in Malaysia, which will take place in December.
Hailing from Karampur village in Uttar Pradesh, the 19-year-old is an agile and speedy forward who helped India reclaim the Sultan of Johor Cup last year. He was instrumental again in the shootout, where he struck twice including a sudden death goal that sealed their victory.
India will face stiff competition in Pool A, which features Japan, Pakistan, Thailand and Chinese Taipei. Pool B consists of Korea, Malaysia, Oman, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan. The Indian team are confident that with their experienced captain at the helm they can secure a place in the World Cup.
The tournament is set to be an exciting one, as the top four finishers in the tournament will qualify for the World Cup. The Indian team have been preparing extensively for this competition and are hopeful that with their captain leading from the front they can once again make India proud.
Uttam Singh’s father expressed his pride at his son being chosen to lead the team, and said he had full confidence in his abilities to do the job. He also wished the entire squad luck for their upcoming tournament.
