The Football Association (FA) banned Brentford FC striker Ivan Toney for breaching FA Rule E8 on 232 occasions from February 2017 to January 2021

The Football Association (FA) banned Brentford FC striker Ivan Toney for breaching FA Rule E8 on 232 occasions from February 2017 to January 2021, which is about not participating in any betting football match.

The overview of FA Rule E8:

  • A participant shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on any football match in the world or insider news
  • An individual participant, when acting in a personal capacity, shall not be permitted to advertise or promote any betting activity that the participant is prohibited from engaging in
  • An individual Participant, when acting in any capacity, shall not deliberately participate in the production of audio or audio-visual content (for publication on any platform whatsoever) where the conduct and/or words of the Participant could reasonably be considered to be actively encouraging the engagement in betting activity which the Participant is prohibited from engaging in

However, when FA sent a statement to Brentford FC to ban Ivan Toney for eight-month with immediate effect, the Brentford club gave a reply by a statement saying.

“Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the independent Regulatory Commission. We will review them before considering our next steps.”

Brentford Club management wrote in a statement

Ivan Toney played 33 matches in the 2022/2023 season and scored 20 goals, but now he will be available to play the match on January 16, 2024. He was also fined 50000 Euros after knowing he bet on his team to lose in 13 matches.

The court gave a statement saying that Ivan Toney was not involved in the match-fixing, and when he placed the bet, he was not on the team playing sheet at that time. There is no evidence found by the investigation team that Ivan Toney tried to talk to his teammate to lose the match.

Ivan has also been instructed to go to Dr. Philip Hopley, a psychiatrist, to help him diagnose gambling addiction.
