Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian Prime Minister and owner of AC Milan and Monza, has died aged 86. Berlusconi had been suffering from chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia for two years before succumbing to the illness.

Berlusconi was renowned for being a powerful figure in Italy, having founded Fininvest as well as becoming the longest-serving president of AC Milan, holding the position for 20 years. During his time at Milan, he helped to make it one of the top teams in the world and earned himself a reputation as a successful businessman.

Berlusconi was also Italy’s Prime Minister between 1994 and 2011, serving three separate terms during that period. His time in office was characterized by controversial policies such as the introduction of strong anti-immigration legislation, and his hold on power led to accusations of corruption.

His death has been met with sadness from people across Italy and beyond, with tributes coming from politicians, footballers, business leaders and others. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said that “Berlusconi embodied the spirit of Italy” and that he would be remembered for his “immense political, economic and social legacy.”
