PSG Coach Christophe Galtier in police custody for discrimination allegations at his former club, OGC Nice

PSG Coach Christophe Galtier is under Police Custody for discrimination allegations at his former club, OGC Nice.

Christophe Galtier is the current manager of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), a French football club that plays in the top division of France, Ligue 1. He was appointed in January 2023, after leaving his previous club, Nice, where he had been in charge since June 2021.

In April 2023, PSG launched an internal investigation into Galtier following allegations of racist and discriminatory remarks made by him while he was at Nice. The allegations were first reported by French football journalist Romain Molina, who claimed that Galtier had written in emails that his team had “too many black and Muslim players” and that he had asked his Muslim players not to observe Ramadan. He also alleged that Galtier had vetoed a player’s potential transfer because of his religion.

According to French football journalist Romain Molina, Galtier allegedly wrote in emails that his club had “too many black and Muslim players” and that he had instructed his Muslim players not to observe Ramadan. Molina was the one who first made the charges. Additionally, he claimed Galtier had blocked a player’s transfer because of his religion.

Galtier denied the allegations and launched legal proceedings against Fournier for defamation. He claimed that Fournier’s claims left him “amazed” and that he refuted them “with the greatest firmness.” He added that he has always valued his team members regardless of their nationality, religion, or culture.

On June 30, 2023, Galtier and his adopted son John Valovic-Galtier, who also works as his advisor, were taken into police custody as part of a judicial investigation into the allegations. Before releasing them, the police questioned them for a long time. No charges have been filed, and the inquiry is still underway.

The allegations have tarnished Galtier’s reputation and put his future at PSG in doubt. PSG are expected to sack him soon, as they are unhappy with his performance and his involvement in the scandal. PSG failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League under Galtier and finished second in Ligue 1 behind Lille. PSG is reportedly in talks with Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona and Spain manager, to replace Galtier.
