Manchester United to Part Ways with Loan Signing Wout Weghorst at the End of Season
Manchester United won’t be making a permanent move for on-loan striker Wout Weghorst, Football Insider can exclusively reveal. The Dutchman joined the Red Devils on loan until the end of the season in January after spending the first half of 2022-23 at Besiktas.
Weghorst was initially a regular starter in Erik ten Hag’s side but has now lost his place to the likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. Despite being a proven goalscorer in his own right, United have made the decision not to pursue Weghorst beyond the end of this season.
The 30-year-old started off well at Old Trafford, scoring on his debut against Burnley and adding several assists in the games since then. However, his recent form has seen him drop down the pecking order and he is now rumoured to be considering a move elsewhere in search of regular first-team football.
United have been able to maintain their position at the top of the Premier League table despite Weghorst’s lack of game time. They have been able to count on Martial, Rashford and Mason Greenwood to lead the line this season, with the latter two currently tied for top scorer with 17 goals each.
The decision not to pursue a permanent deal for Weghorst suggests that United are happy with their current strikeforce and have faith in their ability to secure a top-four finish this season The Red Devils are currently five behind fourth-placed West Ham with eight games left to play
The news of Weghorst’s departure will come as a blow to United fans, who had hoped the Dutchman could provide an alternative option in attack. However, the club have made it clear that their priority remains on maintaining their position at the top of the table and securing Champions League football for next season.
