Lionel Messi Set to Make His Mark on MLS with Inter Miami Move.
Lionel Messi has made good on his promise of seeking a new challenge away from Europe after confirming his move to MLS outfit Inter Miami. The Argentine superstar had been the subject of intense speculation in the transfer market, with Barcelona and Al-Hilal vying for his signature until he opted for a move to South Florida.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with BeIN Sports, Messi reflected on his storied career and conceded that he had achieved all that he was out to do in Europe. “I have achieved everything I wanted to in football. There is nothing left for me here,” the forward said.
Messi’s move away from European shores, however, has not been without controversy. Many have argued whether the 33-year-old will be able to cope in a much less competitive league such as the MLS.
But, it has also been said that his addition to Inter Miami bears testament to the increasing quality of football in the MLS, which has seen remarkable growth over the past decade or so. With teams like Atlanta United and Seattle Sounders joining their ranks recently, the MLS has been home to some high-profile stars, such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney.
In what could be his swansong in professional football, Messi will undoubtedly look to make a mark on the league with Inter Miami and guide them to their first ever MLS Cup victory. He is already being touted as one of the most marketable players in the league and could be the face of MLS going forward.
