Bhaichung Bhutia Raises Concerns over Funding and Equal Pay in Indian Football
Indian footballing legend Bhaichung Bhutia narrowly missed out on the AIFF President post, losing to Kalyan Chaubey. Bhutia attended the AIFF Executive Committee meeting in Bengaluru, where the direct entrants for the 2023-24 I-League season were decided. Following the meeting, Bhutia expressed his worries about the unequal distribution of funds among state associations and the lack of implementation of equal pay for male and female footballers under the leadership of Kalyan Chaubey.
In an interview with Sportstar, Bhutia highlighted the importance of states in producing football talent and voiced his concerns about the limited financial support they receive. He stated that the current allocation of 12 lakhs rupees for administrative purposes and competitions is insufficient to cover the expenses of various age groups, women’s football, Santosh Trophy, travel, and kits. While acknowledging the positive step of providing some funding, Bhutia stressed the need for more substantial support, particularly for states that do not receive sufficient government assistance.
Bhutia also drew attention to the lack of funding dedicated to grassroots programs, a crucial aspect of developing young talent in the country. Additionally, he revealed that Sunil Chhetri, a prominent Indian footballer, was not included on the shortlist for the ‘Footballer of the Year’ award.
Addressing the issue of equal pay, Bhutia reminded Sportstar that Kalyan Chaubey had previously expressed support for gender equality in football, including plans to introduce a minimum salary cap for teams in the Indian Women’s League (IWL). However, Bhutia emphasized that these initiatives have not been implemented yet, and he highlighted the challenges faced by women footballers in terms of facilities and travel arrangements during the IWL. He called for improvements in the standard of travel and accommodation, higher prize money for women’s leagues, and a decision regarding the head coach of the women’s senior national team.
As the AIFF works towards advancing Indian football, Bhutia’s concerns shed light on the crucial areas that require attention and improvement. The equitable distribution of funds, development of grassroots programs, and implementation of equal pay are pivotal for the growth and progression of the sport in the country.
