£840million Investment Gap: Manchester United vs. Manchester City in the Last Decade.
The last decade has seen a stark disparity between Manchester United and Manchester City in terms of investment. While the Glazer family have been heavily criticised for their lack of spending since taking over United in 2005, Sheikh Mansour’s ownership of City has seen vast sums injected to turn them into one of Europe’s most successful clubs.
Football Insider can reveal that the difference in investment between the two is a staggering £840million – with all money poured into United under the Glazers coming from dividends on their initial takeover, whilst Mansour has invested significantly more than he initially paid for City.
Despite the criticism levelled at them, it should be acknowledged that the Glazers have not technically put any of their own money into United, instead taking dividends out on a regular basis. However, this has left the club unable to compete with City in terms of transfer fees and wages – something which was made glaringly obvious last season as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished over 30 points behind Pep Guardiola’s men in the league.
The gulf in investment between the two Manchester clubs is unlikely to close anytime soon. The Glazers are said to be on the verge of selling United for a record-breaking fee, whilst Sheikh Mansour continues pour vast sums into City year after year – all culminating in last season’s historic treble win.
It remains to be seen whether or not United can ever bridge the gap and compete with City in the long-term.
