Sir Donald George Bradman was born on August 27, 1908, in Cootamundra, New South Wales, Australia. He was the youngest son of George and Emily Bradman. His mother, Emily, used to play cricket for the Women’s Intercolonial Cricket Competition in the 1890s and used to bowl left-arm spin. He started playing cricket at an early age and used to do solo practice by himself in his house. He used to hit the golf ball with a cricket stump against a water tank. With that, he improved his hand-eye coordination, as golf balls can take an unpredictable turn and stroking back with a stump that is thinner than a cricket bat gave him precise hitting accuracy.

One day when his uncle had a cricket match, he took Bradman to become a scorer for the match but when they were one man short, Bradman was given a chance to bat. He scored 37 and 29 in that match which made his father take him to Sydney Cricket Ground to watch the fifth Ashes Test match between England and Australia, which is still now one of the greatest test match competitions. After watching the match, he told his father that “I shall never be satisfied until I play on this ground.”

Sir Don Bradman started playing club cricket for the Bowral team and after giving many great performances by him, Sydney newspapers wrote an article about him with his picture. In 1926 Australia lost the Ashes and many players in the team retired, which gave Bradman a chance when he was called up for the practice session in Sydney to test his class.

Sir Don Bradman’s domestic debut

He was selected by the New South Wales team at the age of 19 and scored a century on his debut. He then kept scoring for his team but failed to impress selectors to give him a chance on the New Zealand tour. He then moved to Sydney to give himself more time on the field and then started playing in the Sheffield Shield tournament, which is a 4-day match. He scored a century in both innings against Queensland and the England team played a practice match against his team. He scored 87 and 132, not out against them, which made the selector select him for the first test.

Sir Don Bradman

Sir Don Bradman’s first test match experience was horrifying and also noted down in the history book as England thrashed Australia in the first match in which they lost by 675 runs. It is still the record in the cricket book and maybe the only negative record in which Sir Don Bradman is included. He scored 18 in the first innings and 1 in the second innings. He was dropped for the 2nd but he played the match as a 12th man and when Bill Ponsford got injured, Bradman got substituted for him, in which he was able to score just 19 runs.

In the 3rd test match, Bradman was selected and he took the chance very well as he scored 79 and 112 runs to register his name as the youngest player to make a test century. In the 4th test match, he scored 58 runs and got run out, which was his only run out in his entire career. The 5th test was a relief for the Australian team as they won the match and Bradman scored 123. He later made a record by scoring 1690 runs in a season with an average of 93.88.

He later became the best batsman in the world and finished his career with an average of 99.94. When he saw Sachin Tendulkar playing in the 90s era, he saw himself in Sachin and wanted to meet him personally. On his 90th birthday, Sir Don Bradman invited Sachin Tendulkar to his house, which Sachin accepted. Shane Warne was also the other player who was invited by Sir Don Bradman and together, Sachin and Warne went to his house.

In 2020 Sachin talked in an interview about his experience of meeting Sir Don Bradman to Boria Majumdar on India Today.

Sachin Tendulkar said that for him, it was one of the biggest moments because it was the great Sir Don Bradman who called him and when he was with Shane Warne in the hotel he told him to that he should talk first but Warne denied and told him that what he will talk about he is not batsmen it’s you who is batsmen.

Sachin told Warne that you are the local boy, so he should start the conversation and I would follow it up. When Sachin went to his house, he asked Sir Don Bradman what his average would be if he batted in this Era and Bradman said it would be around 70, which made Sachin ask it again why 70 and the reply Bradman gave was amazing.

Bradman said for a 90-year-old man, that is not bad at all, which made all of them laugh and Tendulkar could feel his humor and positive attitude of him at the same time. They all enjoyed the day and Sachin gave him a beautiful Candlestick Holder which had an engraved message. Sir Donald Bradman wishes you a happy 90th birthday by Sachin Tendulkar 27th of August 1998.”
