What’s Ravi Shastri’s take on India’s test ranking dominance?

Ravi Shastri (former India head coach) recently gave credit to Indian players for claiming the number 1 spot in the ICC men’s test rankings, toppling Australia from the top spot. Rohit Sharma and Co. are now in the top spot with 121 rating points, while Australia is at number 2 with 116 rating points. Both teams are going to clash in the World Test Championship final from June 7–11, 2023, at the Oval, England, and this time India will be looking to claim the trophy as they failed in their last encounter at the WTC 2021 final against New Zealand. Players from both sides are currently training in England to assess the pitch’s behavior.

When asked to Ravi Shastri about the secret behind the Indian test team’s dominance in the ICC Men’s Test rankings, he said that it is because of the players fitness and quality cricket that they play under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.

“It’s a tribute to their consistency, their fitness, and the way they’ve worked over the last five or six years to now be hungry and proud of wanting to belong there”

“It’s the quality of players. If you look at these players, a lot of these players are at their prime when you look at the Indian Test side. They’re experienced, they’re at that age where they’re battle-hardened, and they’ve traveled around the world. They know what Test cricket is all about, they know what one-day cricket is all about, they know what T20 cricket is all about,”

India’s test rankings have improved significantly in the last 2 or 3 years, and Shastri said that if they keep going like this, they will be in the top 3 for 3–4 years.

And the mix is with experienced players and youth. There’s youth filtering in, especially in the white-ball formats of the game. But as a nucleus in Test match cricket, there’s tons of experience. So that’s what makes the difference. When you have that, you’ll see sides that make it to the top two three as history will tell you, they remain there for three-four years,
