Ruturaj Gaikwad is a right-handed Indian batsman currently playing for one of the most beloved cricket franchises, the Chennai Super Kings. The responsibility to provide a great start to his team while playing is on his shoulders, and so far he hasn’t disappointed the CSK management. In fact, he was the orange cap holder (awarded to the player who scores most runs in the IPL league of that year) in IPL 2021. Let’s peek more into the achievements he earned so far in his IPL and international cricket career and what he did to get into the selector’s eyes. Starting from,
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s childhood and life before cricket:
Ruturaj Gaikwad was born on the 31st of January 1997 in Pune, Maharashtra, to Dashrath (his father) and Savita Gaikwad (his mother). He developed an interest in cricket at a very young age; when he was just 5 years old, he started playing cricket with a leather ball, and his zeal to become a cricketer got boosted when he went to watch a cricket match that was happening in Nehru Stadium, Pune, between New Zealand and Australia in 2003, and got fascinated with Brendon McCullum’s style of play as he played his signature scoop shot.
At the age of 11, Ruturaj joined the Vengsarkar Cricket Academy in Pune, where he strengthened his cricket abilities so that one day he could play for the Indian cricket team.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Domestic, International and IPL cricket performance so far:
Domestic Cricket:
After his induction into the Vengsarkar Cricket Academy, he soon played for the U14 and then U16 cricket teams of Maharashtra, and his first-class debut happened at the age of 19 while representing Maharashtra’s Ranji team during 2016-17. Unfortunately, that season didn’t end well for him as he got badly injured in midway while playing against Jharkhand’s Ranji team, due to which he had to undergo surgery. After nearly 2 months, he came back on the field, this time in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but played just one match.
In the very next season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he showed the masses his calibre of becoming a perfect opening batsman by hitting 132 runs facing 110 balls against Himachal Pradesh, which was his maiden List A century. He was the best batsman on Maharashtra’s team that season, scoring 444 runs, which was the third-highest total by a batter in that season.
He performed exceptionally well during the 2018-19 domestic season in both the Ranji and Vijay Hazare trophies; Ruturaj made 456 runs in the Ranji trophy that year and 365 runs in the Vijay Hazare trophies, which paved the way for him in India A.
International Cricket
While playing for India A in June 2019 against Sri Lanka, in his very first match, he made a whopping 187 in just 136 deliveries. Following that, he scored 125 runs in his next match. The youngster scored 470 runs while playing four matches in the bilateral series.
Despite his exceptional performance with the bat, he didn’t get his name in the West Indies tour of team India A, but circumstances turned in his favour as Prithvi Shaw got injured and he got the call as a replacement, and the way he played in the Caribbean Islands left everyone in awe; he scored 207 runs in just 4 innings, and due to hard luck, he missed his century by just 1 run in the last match.
Later on, he also represented the Indian cricket team in two formats, T20 and ODI, but didn’t trouble the scoreboard too much this time; so far, he has played 9 T20 matches and 1 ODI match. He caught the selector’s eye with his exceptional performance in the IPL 2021 and 2022; let’s look at his IPL career.
IPL career
Ruturaj’s performance in domestic cricket helped him get into the CSK in 2019, when he was picked for Rs 20 lakh at his base price. Later on in 2021, he played with every bowler who came in his way and made 635 runs in the IPL 2021, earning him the orange cap for scoring maximum runs in that year’s IPL.
