Mayweather Nears Fight Agreement with UFC Legend
Anderson Silva, the former UFC middleweight champion, turned down a potential fight against Mayweather. The Brazilian mixed martial artist said that he did not want to fight the American, even though he acknowledged Mayweather’s greatness as a boxer. Silva, who is considered one of the greatest fighters in UFC history, recently made his professional boxing debut against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June 2021. Although he lost the fight, Silva demonstrated that he could hold his own against a former boxing champion. Despite his success in the ring, the Brazilian star appears to have no interest in challenging Mayweather, whose professional record boasts 50 wins and no losses.
Despite being offered the chance to fight one of the greatest boxers of all time, Georges St-Pierre remained steadfast in his decision to stay true to his martial arts roots. In the interview with TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter, St-Pierre explained that he couldn’t agree to the fight because he wouldn’t be able to incorporate his wrestling and kicking skills into the match. As a former UFC welterweight champion, St-Pierre had a well-rounded skill set that enabled him to excel in multiple areas of mixed martial arts. However, he felt that boxing alone would not showcase his full potential as a fighter, leading him to turn down the lucrative offers to face Mayweather.
While a fight between Georges St-Pierre and Floyd Mayweather is unlikely to happen due to St-Pierre’s retirement from professional fighting, fans can still speculate on what could have been. The thought of a mixed martial artist taking on a boxer in a kickboxing match is intriguing, especially since Mayweather has shown no interest in competing in MMA. However, St-Pierre’s focus on wrestling during his MMA career may have limited his kickboxing abilities, which could be a disadvantage in a potential bout against Mayweather. Nonetheless, the idea of two legends of combat sports facing off is enough to generate plenty of excitement among fans.
