Yogi Berra: The Hero on and off the Field Who Changed Baseball Forever.
Yogi Berra, one of the greatest baseball players of all time, is remembered not only for his performance in the field but also for his contribution to WWII. On June 6th 1944, Berra was on a rocket boat off the coast of Normandy providing cover fire for D-Day Invasion. He suffered injuries during the attack and had to pull bodies out of the water. His service in WWII was a major influence on his life and career, having taught him that baseball was easy compared to war.
Berra’s remarkable 90 year journey saw him become one of the most beloved figures in baseball history. He won 13 World Series championships with the New York Yankees and went on to become a National Baseball Hall of Famer. He also wrote several books on baseball and opened up “Yogi Berra’s Museum and Learning Center” in New Jersey. A three time American League Most Valuable Player, he was also famous for his witty sayings which are known as ‘Yogi-isms’.
Beyond his reputation in the baseball world, Berra was a role model and mentor to many. He had a strong sense of commitment to his team and worked hard in order to make them succeed. His charisma and leadership style were admired by many, and he strived for excellence on the field as well as off it.
Well after his playing days ended, Berra remained a celebrated figure, earning the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. His legacy as one of the greatest players of all time lives on, and he will continue to be remembered for his remarkable achievements both on and off the field.
