Indian Duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty’s Breathtaking Comeback Clinches Men’s Doubles Title at the Korea Open 2023 Badminton Championship
In a show of sheer grit and skill, Indian badminton doubles team, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, defied the odds to clinch the men’s doubles championship at the 2023 Korea Open in Yeosu.
The thrilling finale witnessed the Indian pair rally from a game down to defeat the top-seeded Indonesian duo, Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto, in an enthralling contest that ended 17-21, 21-13, 21-14 at the renowned Jinnam Stadium.
The victory etches Rankireddy and Shetty’s names in the annals of badminton history, marking their seventh title on the prestigious BWF World Tour and extending their impressive unbeaten run to 10 matches. Their previous triumphs this year include the Swiss and Indonesia Open titles, adding to their growing reputation.
Their victory follows in the footsteps of PV Sindhu, who in 2017 became the first Indian to lift the Korea Open title. Now, Rankireddy and Shetty have joined her, highlighting a new era for Indian badminton on the global stage.
Despite trailing 19-10 in the initial game due to unforced errors, the Indian duo displayed their tenacity and strategic brilliance. Although they lost the first game, their never-give-up spirit paved the way for a spectacular comeback.
The tide began to turn in the second game, with Rankireddy and Shetty carving an 11-8 lead at the break. Riding on their resurgence, they outplayed their rivals after the interval, forcing the match into a third, decisive game.
The final game saw the Indians maintain their aggressive approach, countering every attempt by the Indonesian pair to regain control. Alfian and Ardianto, holders of the All England and Malaysia Open titles, could not match the tactical prowess of Rankireddy and Shetty.
The Indian team kept their composure during the high-stakes 62-minute contest and secured a memorable victory. This marks their third win in five face-offs against Alfian and Ardianto, giving them a favourable head-to-head record.
The win also means that Rankireddy and Shetty have remained undefeated in their last five BWF World Tour finals. Their last defeat came at the French Open 2019 against Indonesian pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.
Despite the early exit of two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, the outcome of the Korea Open will significantly bolster the Indian duo’s qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The next stop for the Indian badminton contingent is the Japan Open, where they will look to extend their winning streak.
