MI vs RR Match Prediction: Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals, 42nd Match of IPL 2023

MI vs RR Match Prediction: Will Mumbai Indians be able to beat the table toppers Rajasthan?

MI vs RR Match Prediction: Mumbai Indians will take on Rajasthan Royals at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on April 30th, 2023.

Mumbai Indians will be looking to be back on a winning run as they lost both their previous matches against Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings, which put them in the 8th spot in the points table of IPL 2023 for now.

Mumbai Indian’s last match was a clear loss for them as they lost to Gujarat Titans by a huge margin of 55 runs which shows how badly Mumbai Indians played in their last match. The bowling unit was expensive with their economy rate in the last match, especially Cameron Green, who gave 39 runs in just 2 overs.

Rohit Sharma looks tired and not focused because he has been playing most of the matches in the international circuit. This year, he also has the pressure to lead Indian Cricket Team for the ODI World Cup, which will happen in India itself. Even Sunil Gavaskar said in his statement that Rohit Sharma should take a break from IPL.

“I do believe that at this stage, he needs a little bit of a break, and come back for the last three or four matches so that he is in rhythm for the World Test Championship,”

Sunil Gavaskar said in a interview.

Gujarat Titans were fully in control over Mumbai Indians in their last match. As for Mumbai’s batter, the opening pair once again failed to score big, and both of them got out under 43 runs. The Mumbai team needs to play as a unit because if they do not for the next match, it is going to be hard for them to qualify for the playoffs.

Rajasthan Royals are back on the top of the table after defeating Chennai Super Kings once again in the IPL 2023. It was a comfortable win for the Rajasthan Royals side as they won the match by 32 runs which gave them a huge boost for the qualifier and also for their mission to win the IPL trophy, which they failed to clinch last season when they came out runner ups after being defeated by Gujarat Titans.

Sanju Samson’s captaincy was one of the biggest reasons why Rajasthan Royals were able to beat Chennai Super Kings once again in the same season of the IPL 2023. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star performer of the match as he scored 77 runs in 43 balls giving the Rajasthan side a great start.

Dhruv Jurel once again showed everyone that he is one of the finest Indian talents and can be a great finisher in the coming days for the Rajasthan Royal side as he scored 34 runs in just 15 balls which gave Rajasthan Royals a chance to post a big total of 202 on Sawai Mansingh Stadium which is mostly known as slow track.

Even though the match was on the Rajasthan Royal’s home ground Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur still, there were more Chennai Super Kings supporters than Rajasthan Royals, and most of them came for the one-man-only MS Dhoni. Sanju Samson also talks about the scene in the post-match conference.

“It feels really great (to be leading the side on their landmark 200th IPL match). I’ve been a part of this franchise for 8-10 years, it is a great achievement for me but I would have liked to see some pink here today in the stadium but I see yellow and we all know what the reason is,”

Samson said in the post match presentation.

Head-to-Head Record

Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals played 27 matches against each other, of which Mumbai Indians won 14 matches, and Rajasthan Royals won 12 matches in IPL history against them. This will be the first meeting in IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians to come against the current table toppers, Rajasthan Royals, and it’s going to be hard for the Mumbai Indians because they are on a losing run, whereas Rajasthan is on winning form.

In the last 5 head to head matches, Mumbai Indians have the upper hand as they won 4 out of the last 5 matches against the Rajasthan Royals in IPL.

MI vs RR: Pitch Report of Wankhede Stadium

Stats from the last 3 matches played on the Wankhede Stadium

Matches Played3
Batting first won1
Batting Second won2
Average first innings score185.3 runs
Pace bowlers took19 wickets
Spin bowlers Took16 Wickets

Wankhede stadium pitches are mostly batting-friendly, but the trends have changed recently, and everyone gets something from the pitch, like in the last match. Both teams scored decent runs, and spinners and pacers also got wickets, so it was a wicket with a neutral surface.

The last match on Wankhede Stadium was between Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings, which turned out to be a high-scoring match, but in the end, Punjab Kings won the match by 13 runs. Pacers and batter enjoyed the pitch condition and performed better than spinners.

Pace bowlers get some swing at the initial period of the match, but after 5 overs, pacers need to rely on changing the speed of the ball.

The Highest team total on this ground in IPL is 235 by Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Mumbai Indians side in IPL 2015, in which AB de Villiers smashed 133 runs in just 59 balls and Virat Kohli 82 runs in 50 balls.

Team Preview of Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians are in deep trouble after losing two matches in a row, and right now, they are in the 8th position of the points table, which is not the right place for the most successful team of the Indian Premier League who won the IPL title for 5 times most by any team in IPL.

Rohit Sharma did not have a great outing in the previous two matches against the Rajasthan Royals, and in both matches, he got out under 10 runs. His opening partner Ishan Kishan though has a decent record against the Rajasthan and can be a key player in the match. He scored 26 and 54 runs in his previous matches against the Rajasthan Royals side.

Mumbai Indians are not able to fill the Bumrah void in the team even though Jofra Archer is back in the team, and they have two other highly skilled Australian pace bowlers, Riley Meredith and Jason Behrendorff. Still, they are struggling to keep in the pace bowling unit. Piyush Chawal is doing really well and taking wickets in most of the matches, and right now is the highest Wicket taker of the Mumbai Indians with 11 wickets in 7 matches.

Mumbai Indians need to make some changes in their lineup and give Dewald Brevis or Duan Jansen a chance to play in the playing 11 because they are both skilled players who can make an impact in the match.

Rohit Sharma should take a rest for a few matches because he is right now looking very laggy and not really in good shape, which can be seen clearly on the field as he is angrier with his actions and not making the right decision on the field. He was disappointed with himself and his team’s performance which he said in the post-match presentation.

“That’s really disappointing. We had pretty much control of the game till about 15 overs and then the last few overs went for way too many runs. Just about execution. We need to execute what’s right on that pitch, who are the batsmen, that kind of a thing and we failed to do that which is why in the end they got way too many runs,”

Sharma said in the post-match conference.

Tilak Sharma’s potential is wasted in the lower order because he is not a player who can hit from the first ball. He needs to open or bat at 1st down because the style of his play is making innings and then hitting, which he already showed in the first match when he was given a chance to bat at the first down.

Arjun Tendulkar needs to bowl more economically if he wants to keep playing in the XI of the team because he is not really amazing with performance.

Team Preview of Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals are high on confidence after getting back top of the points table once again. They played 8 matches, and in that, they won 5 matches and lost 3.

Sanju Samson is doing a great job with his captaincy, which he showed in the last match when Rajasthan Royals just outplayed Chennai Super Kings in every department. Not to forget that the opposition team had the best captain in the world MS Dhoni. Kumar Sangakkara also praised Sanju Samson in the dressing room after the match got over.

Yashasvi Jaiswal played one of the best innings because it was not just aggressive or slow. It was a complete batting performance as he scored 77 runs in 43 balls, making life tough for the Chennai Super Kings bowlers and on the track where bowlers have the upper hand.

Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel just smashed down the Chennai bowlers as both of them played the innings with more than 200 strike rates and took their team to a total of 202. When they came to defend the target, Rajasthan’s bowlers Sandeep Sharma and Kuldip Yadav made really tough for Chennai Super Kings batsmen to get going.

The one issue that Rajasthan Royals are facing is their inconsistent middle order, who are not scoring runs for the team, which includes the team captain Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer.

Adam Zampa was exceptional with his bowling, and the way he bowled in the powerplay against the in-form Devon Conway just outclasses him. Ravichandran Ashwin just stopped free-flowing Rahane on 15 runs.
