Ex-India Selector Reveals Reason for Samson’s Non-Selection

Sarandeep Singh states that only a heavy run score in the Indian Premier League can secure a comeback for Sanju Samson in India's national team.

Sanju Samson has been quite the topic of discussion lately, and for good reason. The Rajasthan Royals captain has not only been consistent but impressive with his performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Scoring a total of 458 runs in 17 matches in IPL 2022, Samson finished with a healthy strike rate of 146. It’s no wonder he’s off to a good start in IPL 2023, having scored 159 runs in just 6 matches so far, with an impressive strike rate of 160.60. However, despite his remarkable form in the IPL, the 28-year-old has yet to match the same kind of success in international cricket in his limited opportunities with the Indian team. Nonetheless, fans can’t help but wonder if Samson will be the one to watch out for in the upcoming matches.

Former India selector Sarandeep Singh recently commented on Sanju Samson’s lack of opportunities to play for India. While Samson did receive a chance to play as an opener in T20Is, he failed to make a memorable impression. Singh acknowledged that Samson’s performance in the 50-over format is better, but with talented players like Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, and Dinesh Karthik also available for selection, it can be difficult to secure enough playing time. It’s worth noting that Samson made his debut for India in T20Is back in 2015, during Singh’s tenure on the selection committee. Despite the challenges he faces, many fans continue to hope that Samson will get his chance to shine in the national team.

Cricket is a game of opportunities and Sanju Samson was a player who received such opportunities as an opener in T20Is under the guidance of selectors. However, despite getting a fair chance, he wasn’t able to make a significant mark at the time. But that didn’t stop him from continuing to play; in fact, he showed great performance when playing in the middle-order during the fifty-over games. Unfortunately, there were other wicketkeeper-batters who were also doing well during that time, which made it tough for Sanju to stand out. It’s a tough world of sports where every player has to prove their worth, and Sanju is no exception. Nevertheless, it’s inspiring to see how he never gave up and continued pushing himself to perform better in every game.

Sanju Samson has a lot to prove if he hopes to make a comeback in the Indian squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup. With players like Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, and Dinesh Karthik in the picture, competition is tough, and Samson recognizes that sometimes, you just don’t get many chances. However, former Indian selector Sarandeep Singh advises Samson to score as many runs as possible to help his case. Winning the IPL for the Rajasthan Royals would be a great accomplishment, but it won’t be enough to guarantee Samson’s return to the national cricket team. Samson’s only option is to keep working hard and delivering outstanding performances every chance he gets.
