Venkatesh Iyer’s maiden ton in his IPL career came against Mumbai Indians in the 22nd match of the IPL 2023 happened at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Mumbai Indians (Captain Surya Kumar Yadav) won the toss and chose to bowl first, KKR (captain Nitish Rana) didn’t start strong and lost wickets early but on the other end, Venkatesh Iyer looked in good touch and started creating pressure on MI bowlers, he kept on dealing in boundaries and reached to his maiden IPL ton, though his team didn’t win the match he showed his worth in the team as a top order batter.
Arjun Tendulkar’s Debut:
Arjun Tendulkar, the son of the legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar made his debut in the IPL against KKR. Arjun got the chance to bowl in the 3rd over of the first innings and he conceived only 5 runs in that, when he got the chance to bowl the second over of his spell, Venkatesh Iyer hit him for a four and a six, and after conceiving 17 runs in his 2 overs he didn’t get the ball again to complete his spell, post-match his father Sachin Tendulkar posted an emotional message on Twitter for him.
Nitish Rana and Hrithik Shokeen heated exchanges:
During the match happening between MI and KKR, KKR’s captain Nitish Rana had some heated exchanges with MI bowler Hrithik Shokeen. What happened was when Nitish Rana was caught at long-on by Ramandeep Singh, Hrithik Shokeen proceeded to give him a standoff, Nitish Rana, who was going to the dugout, turned and exchanged some heated words. The duo was then calmed by MI (Surya Kumar Yadav) and Piyush Chawla.
Hrithik Shokeen and Nitish Rana were fined 10 percent and 25 percent of their match fees for breaching the IPL code of conduct, and MI stand-in captain Surya Kumar Yadav was fined Rs 12 lakh for over-rating.
Venkatesh Iyer’s Maiden Ton:
Batting first against MI in the 22nd match of the IPL 2023, KKR’s top order was falling apart against Mumbai Indians, but Venkatesh Iyer’s aggressive match approach and lethal batting helped KKR put a fighting total on the scoreboard. This was Venkatesh Iyer’s maiden IPL century, and he also became the only other KKR player to make a century; earlier, only Brendon McCullum did that in the inaugural year of the IPL in 2008. Since then, there hasn’t been a single century from the KKR’s side, but Iyer’s century ended the drought in some style. He is now the current Orange cap holder.
Ishan Kishan’s Fifty guides MI to a 5-wicket win over KKR:
While chasing 184 runs, MI opened their innings with Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma. Ishan, coming back to his aggressive approach, started raining sixes and boundaries and made 58 runs in just 25 balls before giving his wicket to Varun Chakravarthy. Despite that, the inning was handled by Surya Kumar Yadav, and he missed his 50 by just 5 runs. Later, Tim David ended the match by taking a single in Lockie Ferguson’s over.
Post Match:
The match became one-sided after Ishan Kishan’s half-century and Sky made some runs; MI looked strong during the match; and KKR needs to put effort into its bowling department and they will come back very soon.
