Rohit Sharma and Co. broke Sri Lanka’s 22-year-old record.
During Day 4 of the second test match against the West Indies, the Indian team displayed a “Bazball” style of playing cricket by smashing 182 runs for the loss of two wickets in 24 overs before declaring the innings. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal partnered together for 98 runs, where Rohit Sharma hit his fastest test fifty in just 35 balls, breaking his own record of 47 balls fifty. Later, Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill took the score to 181 runs, where Ishan Kishan hit his maiden test fifty in his style as the batter smashed 52 runs in just 34 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. Rohit Sharma, after scoring 57 runs, got out, and in quick succession, Yashasvi Jaiswal also got dismissed, but due to their fearless batting style, India broke the 22-year-old record of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka, while playing against Bangladesh in 2001, smashed 100 runs in just 13.2 overs, and the record for scoring the fastest team hundred in test cricket remained with Sri Lanka since then until India broke the record by smashing the fastest team 100, which came in just 12.2 overs against the West Indies in 2023 at Queen’s Park Oval. Not only that, Indian openers scored the India’s fastest ever 50-run opening partnership during the match. India outplayed West Indies in a rain-marred day as the pace bowling attack of India outclassed West Indies on 255, taking a lead of 183 runs over the Caribbeans. Later in the second innings, India declared on 181 runs after 24 overs of play, and till the end of the day, Rohit Sharma and Co. managed to scalp 2 wickets of West Indies for 76.
The West Indies now have to score 289 runs more on Day 5 to secure a win and tie the test series. Soon, ODI matches are going to start between the two teams, with the first match at Kensington Oval, Barbados on 27th July.
