FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023: Shooting in Auckland just before the Women’s World Cup Inauguration

New Zealand city, Auckland, heard a shooting noise just a few hours before the FIFA Women’s World Cup Inauguration, as two people died at the scene and six got injured.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is the most important tournament in women’s soccer. It occurs every four years, showcasing the best teams and players worldwide. The tournament is happening in New Zealand and Australia, where 32 countries compete for the trophy. The first game was between New Zealand and Norway on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at Eden Park in Auckland. But something very terrible and sad happened in Auckland before the game.

A man with a gun attacked people working at a building site. He killed two people and wounded six more, including a police officer. The police also shot him, and he died. No one knows why he did this, but it was not because of terrorism or anything like that.

The shooting made everyone sad and afraid, especially those who visited Auckland for the World Cup. The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Chris Hipkins, said he was very sorry for the people who died or got injured, and he thanked the police and the people who helped them. He also said there was no danger to anyone or the World Cup and that the games would go as planned.

The President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, also said he was very sorry for what happened and that FIFA and everyone who loves soccer were in this hard time with New Zealand. He said that soccer can make people happy and strong, and he hoped the World Cup would bring good feelings and hope to the country.

Even though everyone was sad, the first game still happened as planned, but both teams were quiet for a minute before the game to remember the people who died or got injured in the shooting. The game was fascinating, with Norway scoring first with a header by Ada Hegerberg in the 12th minute. New Zealand scored later with a volley by Hannah Wilkinson in the 34th minute. The second half was very close, with both teams trying to score but missing. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, which was fair for both teams.
