“A left-handed batter’s presence on the team always helps.” Saurav Ganguly praised the 21-year-old left-handed batter.
Former India Captain and ex-BCCI president Saurav Ganguly heaps praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal for his performance in his debut International Test match, as the young Indian star scored his first test hundred on his debut. Not only that, he also broke the 27-year-old record of Saurav Ganguly by scoring 171 runs on foreign soil with his centurion innings, becoming the 17th Indian batter to score a century on his test debut. Saurav Ganguly scored 131 runs at Lord’s in 1996 while playing against England. India won its first test match against the West Indies, as the team beat the hosts by an innings and 141 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma both scored centuries.
Former skipper Ganguly wants Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Indian squad of the ICC World Cup 2023, which is to be held entirely in India, as he knows the importance of a left-handed batter in the team, and if India opens with a left-hand-right-hand combination, then it can easily trouble the opposition’s bowling attack. But the inclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal is looking bleak as he is already selected for the Asian Games 2023 Indian squad, which would be captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad, and the players selected in the squad will not be playing in the World Cup squad because of the clash between these two events unless the BCCI makes some changes to the announced squad later.
Saurav Ganguly, praising the youngster for his maiden test century, said some words when he went to the Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata to see the renovation work.
Scoring a hundred on debut is always massive. I too have done it, so I know how special it is. Even technique-wise, he seems really good. A left-handed batsman’s presence in the team always helps. So, having him in the World Cup squad is a must,”
Ganguly said to Telegraph India
