Asian Games 2023: VVS Laxman to coach Indian cricket team for continental event in China.
Former India great and current National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman is going to coach the Indian Cricket team in the Asian Games 2023 at Hangzhou, China. Previously, reports claimed that VVS Laxman would be the coach of the Indian Cricket team for the Ireland tour, as Team India will be playing against the Ireland team at the Malahide in Dublin. The decision to put the big responsibility in the hands of a legendary cricketer was made as India’s current head coach, Rahul Dravid, would be given rest due to the jam-packed schedule of the Indian team after the West Indies series.
The Indian team would be playing in the Asia Cup 2023 and then in the big event, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, later this year. Rahul Dravid (head coach) and his staff, batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip, will all be on rest mode for some time after the West Indies series. In fact, some players will be given rest before the Asia Cup 2023, and the Indian squad will get changed for the Ireland T20 series. There are some speculations about Jasprit Bumrah’s return to international cricket after suffering from a back injury last year. The player is all set to return to the team.
With VVS Laxman being the interim head coach for the team, he would pick his own squad of batting and bowling coaches. Some names that would be seen guiding the Indian team are Sitanshu Kotak and Hrishikesh Kanitkar (batting) and Troy Cooley and Sairaj Bahutule (bowling). As of now, India is taking on the West Indies in the Caribbean, and with the win in the first test match, India is leading the two-match test series by 1-0. Further, there are matches of ODI and T20 scheduled with the West Indies team, and some youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan also made their debut in test cricket.
