Yashasvi Jaiswal surpassed Sunil Gavaskar to set this unique record.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who recently had his international debut playing for India in test cricket, performed as expected from him as the 21-year-old youngster scored a century in his debut test match. He scored 171 runs against the West Indies and showed a glimpse of the talent he holds. With his 150+ runs, he is now in the unique list of Indian batters who scored 150+ runs in their test debut, and one of them was great legendary player Sunil Gavaskar, whom he also surpassed. Now Yashasvi Jaiswal became the second youngest Indian batter who scored 150+ runs in his test debut, just behind the late Madhav Apte, who did this task when he was 20 years and 137 days old.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was 21 years and 196 days old when he scored 150+ runs in his test debut, whereas Sunil Gavaskar was 21 years and 277 days old in his test debut. He also became the fourth youngest Indian cricketer to score a century in a test debut after Prithvi Shaw (18 years, 329 days), Abbas Ali Baig (20 years, 126 days), and Gundappa Vishwanath (20 years, 276 days). Yashasvi Jaiswal, after being impressive during the IPL 2023, was picked up by selectors for India’s Test series against the West Indies, as the batter has performed consistently for his team, the Rajasthan Royals, in the IPL and in domestic cricket, where his average was 80.
Apart from surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s record, he now holds the record for the highest score by an Indian batter overseas on Test debut, plus the opening partnership of him and Rohit Sharma, which was 229 runs, is now the highest Indian opening partnership against the West Indies in the Caribbean. Earlier, the record was 159 runs, which was between Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer. India won the first test match against the West Indies by 141 runs and an inning.
