Ajit Agarkar likely to be the new BCCI chief selector, quits Delhi Capitals.

Former India great all-rounder Ajit Agarkar is likely to become the chief selector of the senior men’s cricket team after failing to get the post for the last two years even after being the frontrunner in the chief selector’s race. Rumors were floating around that Ajit Agarkar would once again try for the new chief selector’s post, and on Thursday, the speculations proved right as the Delhi Capitals released Ajit Agarkar from the role of assistant coach, thanking him for his contribution to the team. DC seemed like they were also looking for a management change, as with Ajit Agarkar they released Shane Watson too. He will now be free of the IPL franchise responsibilities and can freely join the race to become the new BCCI chief selector.

As of now, the position is vacant as the last chief selector, Chetan Sharma, was caught in a sting operation in which he openly revealed sensitive information about players and the team selection committee. As per PTI, big names like Ravi Shastri and Dilip Vengsarkar are also seen as options, but they might not apply for the post, so the job would likely be offered to Agarkar. Even if Vegsarkar applies for the job and gets the post, he would be on the post for 1 year, as he served for 3 years already as the chief selector from September 2005 to August 2008, and there is a restriction of four years to be the chief selector. The last date to apply for the job was June, and from July, interviews are going to start for the post.

Ajit Agarkar has the experience that is required to get this prestigious role, as the all-rounder played 26 test matches, 191 ODI matches, and 4 T20I matches for India, and the BCCI wants to fill the post before the Asia Cup 2023, as the World Cup 2023 is around the corner.
