Saurav Ganguly doesn’t understand Why Ajinkya Rahane has been made Vice Captain.
Former BCCI president and now Delhi Capitals; director of Cricket, Saurav Ganguly, recently questioned the thought process of the BCCI after they made Ajinkya Rahane vice captain of the India Cricket team for the West Indies tour. India is going to tour the West Indies in July for all-format series, and the schedule for the upcoming matches of the Indian team against the West Indies has already been released by the BCCI. Rohit Sharma is going to captain the team as expected, but the biggest surprise for Saurav Ganguly was Ajinkya Rahane being the deputy of Rohit Sharma on the West Indies tour, as he just recently played a test match before being out of the International test format for nearly 18 months.
Though Ajinkya Rahane proved his worth by becoming the highest scorer for the Indian team in the WTC final, where India was defeated by Australia by 209 runs, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that it was due to Rahane’s innings that the final went to the last day. His selection for the WTC final was due to his splendid form in the IPL 2023, and he didn’t disappoint the selectors by making vital runs in the final. Players like KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are all out of cricket due to injuries, and that can be the reason behind choosing Rahane, but Saurav Ganguly was baffled by this decision and, while giving an interview to PTI, said that.
“I won’t say it’s a step backward. You have been out for 18 months, then you play a Test and you become a vice-captain, obviously, I don’t understand the thought process behind it. There is Jadeja, who has been there for a long time and a certainty in Test matches, he is a candidate, may be anybody but to just come back and straightway become vice-captain after 18 months, I don’t understand”
My only thing is that selection shouldn’t be such hot and cold. There has to be continuity and consistency in selection,”
