“I just felt that the game was meant to be finished by me” Ravichandran Ashwin recalls historic win over Pakistan at MCG”

Ravichandran Ashwin was all nostalgic recalling the moment when India beat Pakistan in the ICC T20 world cup 2022 opener at MCG where innings from Virat Kohli helped India pulled the victory from the jaws of defeat, India needed 16 runs in the last over of the match and Virat Kohli was batting greatly but he was at the non-striker end at that time, India lost Hardik Pandya in the first ball and Dinesh Karthik came to the crease, he brought back Virat Kohli to strike who took a double and then the match changed when Kohli hit a six off the no-ball and later 3 runs and a wide but the twist came when Dinesh Karthik got out in the second last ball and Ravichandran Ashwin came to bat where he scored the winning runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin recalls the memorable run he took and the moments of that match when Virat Kohli gave him seven options to hit the last ball and the way he was cursing Dinesh Karthik for putting him in that situation while speaking to ICC, Ashwin recalls the winning moment and said that:

“I was cursing Dinesh Karthik for asking me to do the tougher job. As I was just cursing him, when I walked in, I realised the enormity of what I was getting in to. People yelling, I haven’t seen such a crowd ever. Virat just gave me like seven options to play off that one ball. If only I was that capable of playing all those shots I wouldn’t be batting at no. 8. I just talked to myself, I couldn’t say that to him. I looked at Virat and his eyes seemed like he was possessed. I said, okay he’s on another planet and let me come back to earth. The moment he bowled a wide I knew I won the contest”.

“I think about it every night when I go to sleep. To be honest what happens, every time I see the video on social media, I think about it, what if the ball had just gripped and hit my pad. It was pretty close for comfort. I just felt that the game was meant to be finished by me. That’s how I felt honestly terrific innings by Virat and one of the better games I’ve watched and been a part of,”.
