India Defeats Nepal in SAFF Championship 2023 Group Stage Match
The Indian football team started their Group Stage campaign in style, by registering a dominant win over Pakistan on a rain-lashed evening. Led by captain Sunil Chhetri, India looked to maintain their winning momentum and secure top spot in the Group standings when they faced Nepal in the second match of the SAFF Championship 2023 at Sree Kanteerava Stadium.
Aided by heavy showers, India managed to keep it tight defensively as goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu stood tall in between the posts, making some crucial saves throughout the course of 90 minutes. With Sunil Chhetri providing creative playmaking abilities up front for the team, India was able to break the deadlock just before half time with an exquisite finish from striker Manvir Singh.
The second half saw a more tactical approach from both sides as Nepal tried to level things up in front of their home crowd. However, India’s impressive defensive setup proved too good for the hosts as they managed to hold on and secure all three points at stake.
India’s win over Nepal has now seen them move into the top spot of Group standings and they are only one victory away from booking a place in semi-finals of the tournament. With Sunil Chhetri leading by example, India will look to make it two wins out of two when they face Maldives on Thursday night.
