Jose Mourinho Steps Down From UEFA Football Board.
Jose Mourinho has stepped down from his role on the UEFA football board, citing conditions which “no longer stand”.
The Portuguese manager had been on the board since 2019, when he took up the position in order to help shape European football policy. It is unclear what specific changes have led to his decision to quit.
In a letter sent to UEFA chief of football Zvonimir Boban, who is also chair of the board, Mourinho said: “I regret to inform you that, effective immediately, I will be renouncing my participation in this group. The conditions which I so strongly believed in when I joined are no longer standing and I felt the obligation to take this decision.”
Mourinho’s decision will be seen as a blow to UEFA, but his departure from the football board could also open up the way for other leading figures in the sport to join and help shape future policy.
Mourinho has been one of Europe’s most influential managers in recent years, having won trophies with Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan. He also reached two Champions League finals during his time at Manchester United and is recognised as one of Europe’s best tactical coaches.
The Portuguese coach has had an often-turbulent relationship with UEFA since taking over at Manchester United in 2016. In 2018 he was banned from attending Europa League matches after comments made about officiating following a match against Spanish side Sevilla.
Despite his departure from the board, Mourinho’s influence in European football is likely to remain strong. His decision to step down could pave the way for new voices and ideas in shaping European football policy.
