ENG vs AUS Ashes Test 1: Australia Captain Pat Cummins delivered a thrilling Ashes test 1 win:
Australia clinched a thriller on Day 5 of the Ashes Test 1 with Australia captain Pat Cummins playing a match-winning innings of 44 runs when Australia was sliding down towards defeat, but it was Australia’s captain Pat Cummins who refused to give up and at the end won the Ashes Test 1. Off spinner Nathan Lyon contributed valuable 16 runs for the 9th wicket partnership to take Australia home. England were all out for 273 runs in their second innings, giving the visitors a target of 282 runs to claim Test 1 of the Ashes series. Usman Khawaja, who scored a fantastic century in the first innings, remained resilient this time as well and bravely faced England’s bowling attack, scoring another half-century. Australia was getting close to the target, but it was England’s captain Ben Stokes who took his wicket by bowling an off-cutter.
Australia still needed 72 more runs to win the match, and it was Alex Carey and Pat Cummins on the crease. Joe Root, after failing to grab the ball two times during his spell, finally got rid of Alex Carey, who was closing down the chase. Australia were now 227-8 and needed 52 runs to win the match. This is the time when Pat Cummins changed gears and started smashing every loose ball. Nathan Lyon on the other end was supporting his captain, and though once it looked like a win for the home team, the tides turned in the visitors favor.
Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon’s partnership of 55 runs for the ninth wicket is the fourth-largest in test cricket, and chasing down 282 runs at Edgbaston, England, in a test match is the joint-highest chase done by a team. In 2008, South Africa chased 281 runs. England are now down to 0-1 in the five-match Ashes test series.
