Anett Kontaveit announced retirement after suffering from a back injury and will play her last Wimbledon tournament next month
The 27-year-old Anett Kontaveit announced retirement after she suffered a back injury and will play her last professional tournament which is going to happen in the next month from July 3rd, 2023.
Anett Kontaveit announced her retirement after Doctors suggested she not play any further high-intensity matches because it would be very hard on her back.
Kontaveit took a break in 2022 because of the same back injury problem, and now it is getting very hard for her to sustain the pain from time to time, so that is why she came to the very big decision to retire after the next tournament.
Anett Kontaveit ranked 79th right now in the world, but last year she ranked number 2 for a few weeks. After that, she had a back problem that came out as she has a lumbar disc issue. She won six titles in her career; the last title came last year at Saint Petersburg.
She said goodbye to her fans on Instagram as she wrote down a long message about his issue and why she could not continue further in tennis.
Today I am announcing that I am ending my career as a competitive athlete. After several doctor’s visits and consultations with my medical team, I have been advised that I have lumbar disc degeneration in my back,”
“This does not allow for full-scale training or continued competition. Therefore, it is impossible to continue at the top level in such a highly competitive field,”
Kontaveit wrote on Instagram post
Many tennis professionals got shocked by her sudden post by her, and many of them congratulated her on the life ahead.
Gabriela Ruse congratulated her on her amazing career and also on the next chapter ahead. The recently retired Indian Tennis player Sania Mirza also congratulated her in her post. Some other tennis stars who reacted to her post were – Ons Jabeur, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Harriet Dart, Naomi Broady, Daria Saville, and Katie Boulter.
