Ramesh Powar will be the new head coach of Gujarat.
Former India Women’s team head coach and ex-Indian off spinner Ramesh Powar has been appointed as the new head coach of the Gujarat team. He will be seen coaching the Gujarat senior team for the upcoming domestic season. Earlier, Ramesh Powar coached the Indian Women’s Cricket Team twice. After the poor show of the India women’s team in the ODI World Cup 2022, where the team didn’t even qualify for the playoffs, everyone was speculating that his tenure would get over with the team, but the BCCI decided to retain him for another one year, extending it to December 2023. Now he will be using his experience to guide young talents in domestic cricket.
“The decision to appoint Ramesh Powar as Gujarat’s head coach was taken by the Cricket Advisory Committee of the Gujarat Cricket Association, in which former Indian wicketkeeper batsman Parthiv Patel was also present,” as said by a reliable source.
Before coaching the Indian women’s cricket team, he was guiding the Mumbai Ranji team, and under his coaching, Mumbai added another Ranji trophy title to its name. Gujarat’s team was earlier coached by former first-class cricketer Mukund Parmar; Ramesh Powar will be the second former Mumbai cricketer to coach a domestic team this year; and Sulakshan Kulkarni, an ex-wicketkeeper batsman, is going to coach Tamil Nadu.
Ramesh Powar had a brief career in international cricket, as he played 31 ODIs for the Indian side and took 34 wickets, and in the two test matches he played, he scalped six wickets. He also played in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) for three seasons (2008–2010), then played for the defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011, and again returned to the Punjab Kings in 2012. Though he wasn’t that significant in the IPL, his experience of playing cricket got him the seat of coach in the Gujarat team.
