ICC WTC final, India and Australia fined by ICC for slow over rates: Shubman Gill was also fined.
The World Test Championship (2021–23) final was heartbreaking for the Indian cricket team and the Indian fans as the team couldn’t lift the ICC WTC mace this time as well. This was the second consecutive ICC WTC final for team India; in the first final, New Zealand defeated them, and now it was Australia who won the ICC WTC final (2021–23) by defeating India by 209 runs. Australia displayed a dominant performance in the entire final, from bowling to batting. They overpowered India in every aspect and eventually lifted the ICC WTC trophy for the first time, becoming the only cricket team to have all the ICC trophies to their name. But after the final, both teams faced fines from the apex cricket governing body, ICC.
The ICC imposed fines on both teams for slow over rates, with India facing a heavier fine than Australia, as the former was fined 100 percent of their match fees and the latter was fined 80 percent of their match fees. India was 5 overs short of the targeted overs when time was taken into consideration, and Australia was 4 overs short. According to Article 2.22 of the ICC code of conduct for the players and player support personnel, players are to be fined 20% of their match fees for every over their side fails to deliver in the allotted time.
Shubman Gill was also fined under Article 2.7 of the ICC code of conduct for the public criticism of the third umpire, Richard Kettleborough, when he gave him out after deciding that the catch taken by Cameron Green behind the stumps was clean. The youngster would have to pay 15% of their match fees, which would take the total fine that he has to pay to 115% of his match fees. Shubman Gill appeared to be criticizing the decision given by the third umpire by posting a tweet on his social media account.
