Miguel Tejada Named Manager of Karachi Monarchs for Baseball United’s Inaugural Season
Former Major League Baseball star Miguel Tejada has been named the manager of the Karachi Monarchs, a team based in Pakistan and part of the newly-formed Baseball United league. The 2002 American League MVP, who played shortstop for six All-Star teams during his career, will be at the helm when the Monarchs open their inaugural season in late 2024.
Baseball United is the brainchild of global investors hoping to bring professional baseball to a region known more for cricket than America’s pastime. Along with Tejada’s Monarchs, the league will also feature the Mumbai Cobras, setting up what could become an intense rivalry between India and Pakistan.
Tejada’s appointment as manager is being met with enthusiasm by players and fans alike. “I’m so excited to be the first manager of the Karachi Monarchs,” Tejada said in an official statement. “My lifelong dream has been to bring the game I love to new countries, and this opportunity gives me a chance to actively do that.”
The Baseball United league is still in its early stages, and more teams are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. It’s not yet clear which countries will field franchises or who the other managers will be.
For now, Tejada is focused on building his own squad and preparing them for their first season. He’s already reached out to the league to help set up training camps and secure the necessary resources for his team to be successful.
“I’m very passionate about this project,” Tejada said. “I want my players to feel like they’re part of something special, something that will make a real difference in the world.”
