Sunil Gavaskar and Virender Sehwag lambasted Hardik Pandya for his last interruption.
Gujarat Titans had a great IPL season this year as well, though they didn’t lift the trophy this time as CSK outperformed them in the final of the TATA IPL 2023. But the way youngsters like Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan played this season truly reflects that the team management and leadership of GT were on point. Bowlers like Mohit Sharma played a vital role in the death overs for Gujarat Titans; he took crucial wickets in the final overs of the game to turn the match in his team’s favor, and that’s what he was doing in the final of the IPL 2023. Mohit Sharma had to stop CSK batters from scoring 13 runs in the final over, and he almost delivered his dream over by consuming just 3 runs in the four balls he bowled.
But in the last 2 balls, when CSK needed 10 runs, he missed the spot, and CSK lifted the IPL trophy for the 5th time. The thing that was noticed by the veterans like Virender Sehwag and Sunil Gavaskar was when Mohit Sharma was about to bowl his last two deliveries. GT’s skipper Hardik Pandya had a chat with him, which disappointed Virender Sehwag and Sunil Gavaskar as, according to them, it broke the focus of the bowler and that changed the result of the match. Both former Indian players(Virender Sehwag and Sunil Gavaskar) had their opinions on this.
“He had bowled the first 3-4 delivery absolutely brilliantly. Then, for some strange reason, some water was sent to him. In the middle of the over, some drink was sent to him. Then Hardik Pandya came and spoke with him. You know when a bowler is in that rhythm and he is mentally also there, nobody should have said anything to him. Maybe from a distance, they could have just said ‘well bowled’. Going to them, talking to him – I do not think that was the right thing to do because suddenly, he was looking here and there. Till then, he was focused and I do not think what they did was the right idea. Because after that, he went for runs,”
Gavaskar told Sports Today.
“When some is bowling well and is delivering with yorkers, why will you go and have a word with him? He knows that the batter needs 10 from 2 and that he needs to stick with yorkers. Then why will you waste his time? Had Mohit been hit for runs, then he could have gone and had a word, but when the bowler is doing his job you want to get done with the over quickly.”
