Zhang Zhizhen gives China Men Singles first win at French Open after 86 years

Zhang wins the first round of the French Open 2023 against Dusan Lajovic in a straight set by 6-1 and 4-1 to become the first Chinese professional player to win the match in the French Open after 86 years. However, his opponent Dusan Lajovic retired due to injury.

Zhang’s next match is against Argentinian Thiago Agustin Tirante, who is currently ranked 153 in the World Tennis Ranking. He also became the first Chinese men’s singles tennis player to be in Wimbledon in the Open era.

“It’s incredibly challenging to win a five-set match at the Grand Slam, It takes a great deal of physical stamina and mental strength to endure such a grueling test of endurance.

“However, I was pleased with my condition today and felt that I was able to seize the key opportunities that presented themselves. This allowed me to come out on top and secure the victory.”

“As I’ve said before, I’m not particularly fond of playing on clay courts,” “But all of my best results have actually come from playing on this very surface. It just goes to show that how these things are often unpredictable and don’t go according to plan.”

Zhang Zhizhen said in the interview

Three Chinese players entered the French Open first round, but only Zhang could win the first round. Shang Juncheng and Wu Yibing both lost their first match in the first round of the French Open.

Zhang is right now ranked 71 in the world, and if he can win the 2nd round of the French Open, he might be able to gain some rank in the next ranking cycle of the World Tennis Ranking.
