Welcome Back to the WNBA: Vice President Kamala Harris Celebrates Brittney Griner’s Triumphant Return
Vice President Kamala Harris, along with players from the Los Angeles Sparks and Phoenix Mercury, celebrated Brittney Griner’s return to the WNBA after five months in a Russian penal colony.
On Friday night, Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles hosted a historic game between the two teams, with the home team emerging victorious with a 94-71 score. Before the game, Vice President Harris met with players from both teams and thanked them for their support of Griner during her imprisonment.
Griner was reunited with her team on April 30 after being released from Russian custody for almost five months. She was detained in December on charges of taking part in a fight at a Russian night club. Griner was put in solitary confinement while waiting for her trial and sentence, with her team paying the $10,000 fine to secure her release.
Griner’s return to the court was highly anticipated by fans and players alike, with Sparks guard Riquna Williams calling it “a huge moment for the WNBA.” When Griner was introduced during the starting lineups, she received a standing ovation from the crowded arena.
The Phoenix Mercury star played 25 minutes and scored 8 points in her return to action. Despite her team’s loss, Griner said that it felt “amazing to be back” and that she hopes “to continue making a difference in the WNBA.”
Vice President Harris also took the time to thank Griner for her courage and resilience, saying that “her story shows us all, especially youth, how you can come through adversity with grace and determination.” She commended both teams for their unwavering support of Griner throughout her tribulation.
The WNBA season opener proved to be a memorable night, as it marked the return of one of the league’s most beloved stars and served as a reminder that no obstacle is too big when we work together.
