Indian Badminton Team Knocked-out of the Sudirman Cup after a loss against Malaysia

India’s Badminton team lost their first match against the Chinese Taipei on Sunday by 1-4 in favor of Chinese Taipei, and it was a must-win match for the Indian team, but they lost against Malaysia by 0-5, which such a downgrade performance by the nation which a year ago won their first Thomas Chup.

The first match was a mixed double in which Dhruv Kapila and Ashwini Ponnappa played against Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie, who lost to them by 16-21, 17-21 in the Malaysian pair’s favor. A straight-set win gave the Malaysian team a 0-1 lead.

The second match was followed by Kidambhi Srikanth from India against Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia, ending in Lee Zii’s favor by 16-21, 11-21. It gave a 0-2 lead to the Malaysian side.

Once again, India’s hope was on P.V. Sindhu’s shoulder, which she was not able to carry, and she lost the match against Goh Jin Wei after winning the first set 21-14 but lost the other two by 10-21, 20-22. Sindhu was disappointed about her performance which she said in the post-match interview.

“It is a bit disappointing because I was trailing by too many points in the third set and I came back, I should have taken it,”

“Coming very close and losing those two points, of course its very disappointing. Overall it was a good match, I should have maintained the lead from the third game or should have been equal atleast but I gave her a huge lead and that made the difference.”

Then the fourth match was a Men’s double in which Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a loss against Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik by 18-21, 19-21.

All the hope was on the Indian women pair Gayatri and Tressa, who lost to Tan Pearly and Thinaah Muralitharan by 15-21, 13-21 to make the Malaysia team win the match by 0-5.
