Throwback Sundays: Reliving the Phillies’ Red-Filled Mid-2000s Heyday in Philadelphia

Relive the Phillies' mid-2000s heyday with "Throwback Sundays" in Philadelphia, where fans can celebrate the team's success and stars like Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, and Cole Hamels.

Ah! Philadelphia in the mid-2000s. The days when Phillies red was everywhere and it seemed like everyone was at Citizens Bank Park on Friday nights or Saturday afternoons. It’s hard to believe that five years could have changed so much – from 2007 to 2012, the city of Philadelphia was truly a sea of red as Phillies fever swept through the city.

The Phillies were fresh off their 2006 World Series victory, and it seemed like the good times would just never end for the team’s loyal fanbase. The 2008 season saw a cast of stars that included Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Cole Hamels lead the way to another National League pennant, and the team’s first back-to-back playoff appearances since 1977.

The Phillies continued to be a force in the National League for the next several years. In 2009, they went 93-69 and won their third straight N.L. East division title; in 2010, they won 97 games and a fourth straight division title before being eliminated in the NLCS; and in 2011, they went 102-60 to win their fifth straight division title.

But it wasn’t all good news for Phillies fans – after winning just 81 games in 2012, the team’s playoff streak came to an end. Though Phillies red still remained a common sight throughout Philadelphia, it was clear that the team’s once-dominant era had ended.

Though the Phillies of today may not be as successful as their mid-2000s counterparts, they still have plenty of loyal fans in Philadelphia. The team even recently made a subtle nod to their glory days with the introduction of “throwback Sundays,” when fans can wear Phillies red and cheer on their team.

So while things may have changed in Philadelphia since the mid-2000s, it’s clear that the city still loves its Phillies – and always will.
