Something went wrong with Gilbert Burns’ shoulder during his fight at UFC 288.
The co-main event of UFC 288 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, between Belal Muhammad and Gilbert Burns ended in a unanimous decision victory for Belal Muhammad. The fight was a late addition to UFC 288 as the earlier matchup between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush was rescheduled for UFC 289 after Charles Oliveira suffered an injury while training. Both fighters (Belal Muhammad and Gilbert Burns) agreed to fight on 16 days’ notice.
Belal Muhammad showed up in the octagon with his plan and executed it perfectly against Burns. From body shots to some great punches, he had everything to stop Burns, and he did it well, post-fight Gilbert Burns updated his fans about the injury he sustained during the fight. At the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White also acknowledged Gilbert Burns’ injury and praised the Brazilian for continuing to fight even after injuring his shoulder in the initial rounds of the fight.

Gilbert Burns’ Shoulder Injury:
Gilbert Burns tweeted post-fight about his injured shoulder and the probability of getting surgery if required. The Brazilian had so far appeared in three fights in less than four months of this year 2023 and won two of his last three fights, the first one by submission over Neil Magny at UFC 283 and the second one over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 287, but the last one didn’t end in his favor, and the Brazilian lost his expected title shot in the welterweight division.
Belal Muhammad probably becomes the number one contender for the welterweight title against Leon Edwards, and this time he could become the champion if he gets the opportunity to fight the current welterweight champion Leon Edwards. Both fighters fought before, but the match ended due to an eye poke by Leon Edwards in the second round of the fight.
